The History of United Physicians
1996 – 2000
United physicians (UP) is a physician-led organization dedicated to supporting independent physicians and advancing high quality value-based care throughout southeast Michigan. UP’s roots date back to 1996 with the creation of Premier Physicians Network (PPN), a collaborative network formed to strengthen physician representation, contracting capabilities, and practice support services.
2000 – 2012
In 2000, United Physicians was established through the merger of Beaumont Physician Group Royal Oak and Beaumont Physician Group Troy, creating a stronger and more unified organization focused on serving physicians and their patients. As healthcare continued to evolve, PPN merged into United Physicians in 2012, further expanding the organization’s contracting infrastructure, clinical integration initiatives, and physician resources.
2012 – Present
Today, United Physicians represents more than 1,600 multi-specialty independent physicians across Southeast Michigan and is the largest independent provider organization in the State. Through strategic payer contracting, credentialing support, practice resources, quality improvement initiatives and advocacy efforts, UP helps physicians remain independent while succeeding in an increasingly complex healthcare environment. Guided by physician leadership, UP continues to lead and strengthen the connection between providers, payers, and patients while supporting exceptional care delivery throughout the communities it serves. UP offers its physicians many ways to participate in payer contracts from basic fee for service arrangements all the way to full risk contracts for qualifying, high performing practices.
