Bingham Farms, MI - United Physicians doctors and prescribers generated over 1 million electronic prescriptions in calendar year 2009, eclipsing the total generated in 2008 by almost 500,000 e-prescriptions - a year-over-year improvement of almost 100%. "This is proof-positive that United Physicians continues to be a major force in the adoption, deployment, and use of e-prescribing in Michigan. Last year, United Physicians doctors, as part of my1HIE (My One Health Information Exchange) were instrumental in helping the State of Michigan vault from a ranking of 5th to 3rd nationally for the use of e-prescribing behind only Massachusetts and Rhode Island," said Steven Grant, M.D., President and CEO of United Physicians.
Dr. Grant went on to say "Along with the enormous increase in e-prescription volume, we're delivering improved efficiency and quality to our patients that is made possible through the use of My WorkspaceSM, the physician web portal that features an e-prescribing tool call DrFirst™. DrFirst™ helps physicians identify, select, and prescribe medications that are covered by their patients' insurance, recommend generic equivalents for brand name drugs, and avoid potentially harmful drug-to-drug or allergic reactions to prescriptions. For example, among the 1,057,353 e-prescriptions generated by United Physicians doctors in 2009, there were 9,784 formulary changes, 25, 849 drug-to-drug interactions changes, and 1,979 allergy-to-drug changes in medications prescribed to patients." Using estimates generated by the Southeast Michigan e-Prescribing Initiative (SEMI), the electronic prescriptions generated by United Physicians doctors delivered consolidated savings of almost $5,000,000 - not including the administrative savings and efficiencies. According to Frank DeLaura, COO of United Physicians, "it is our hope that the exponential growth of e-prescribing helps provide a template for United Physicians adoption and use of patient registries - which are used to help deliver preventive care and chronic disease management solutions and services." "We currently have over 200 United Physicians doctors who are using WellCentive© - a patient registry tool that is also available on My Workspace, and our results are nothing short of fantastic. Just like e-prescribing, United Physicians doctors' use and adoption of this tool positions us as an unquestioned leader in this area. Simply put, the use of patient registries is enabling our doctors to deliver better, more effective healthcare, while at the same time, positioning their practices for the future of the healthcare industry." |
